Additional Tour Information

The Law Library is in two architecturally-distinguished buildings.

1.   The Reading Room of the Legal Research Building is open to anyone, and there is material about the Legal Research building at the Reading Room desk and in the Reading Room display case.

2.   The Allan and Alene Smith Addition is underground, accessible from the Reading Room and from the basement of the Legal Research Building.  The information below is about the underground addition.  Additional factual information is available on the Library Fact Sheet (pdf).

The Smith Addition’s primary function is as a study and research space.  Those studying and doing research need quiet.  Therefore, the Library discourages group tours except those which facilitate use of the Library as a place to do research.

Instructional Tours:

a.    Self-conducted audio tours: These tours, designed to help first year law students learn to use the library for legal research, are available at the Circulation Desk on Sub-2, whenever the Library is open.  You must be a U of M Law Student, or hold a pass to use the Law Library, to use these tours.  Further information on these two tours is available at Library Tour Information.

b.   Reference-librarian conducted tours:  Groups officially connected to the Law School may request an instructional tour by calling Barb Garavaglia, Head Reference Librarian, 734-764-9338.  Tours should be arranged well in advance.

Architectural Tours:

a.   Self-guided walking tour:  A paper handout at the Reference/Information Desk will guide you through significant public spaces in the Law School, including the Library.

b.   Architectural Record reprint:  You may purchase a reprint of the article contained in the display cases, in the Library Administrative Office during business hours Monday through Friday.  At other times, inquire at the Reference/Information Desk.

c.   Other tours:  Please do not bring groups into the Library without prior permission.  Permission is usually denied, in order to keep the Library quiet for its primary purpose.  Call the Director’s Office, 734-764-9322, for more information about tours.
