All written work should be typed with double spacing, and be no longer than essential to communicate what is required, generally only one or two pages. Students' name, date, type of assignment (i.e., homework, group project, or paper) should be placed in the top right corner. Succinctness and insightfullness are both important.
HOMEWORK: Daily homework will be described during the class prior to the homework's due date. These assignments typically will require students to carry out some research or activity, summarize it on a single page, and be prepared to present or discuss it during the appropriate class session. These assignments will be eligible for full credit only if submitted on the day the topic is discussed. Late assignments will be eligible for half credit. Occasionally, there also will be assignments to complete during class sessions. These assignments typically will require students to summarize material previously covered in assigned readings or class discussions, or to carry out a short thought and writing activity relevant to class that day. Students are responsible for checking with the instructor if they are not entirely clear what is expected. Across the term, there will be at least 25 assignments, each worth up to 10 points. It is expected that most students will complete most assignments, although the grade structure is designed so that occasional skipping of assignments is acceptable. Assignments will be returned only if they fail to be accepted for full credit. GROUP REPORTS: Several times during the term group projects will be assigned. These projects will require students to work closely with classmates, researching a problem and discussing issues relevant to aging. Upon completion of the project, students will be expected to share their findings with the rest of the class, and will have the option to complete a written report worth up to 50 points. Reports may be submitted as a group, or individually. Group reports will be due one week after the topic is discussed. |
