As a result of the discrimination that many Latino students face in the U.S. educational system, 30% of all 16 to 24 year old Latinos are high school dropouts 1. At the University of Michigan, only 4.76% of the enrolled students in 2003 were Hispanic American 2. In that same year, only 3.5% of the students who received a degree were Hispanic 3. This due, in part, to the fact that Latinos are the least likely to attend college out of any other ethnic group. Of the few who do enroll in college many of them never graduate. Richard Fry suggests that a gread deal can be done to assist Latino students enrolled in universities.4 We feel it is important to promote a positive college experience , thus encouraging a higher number of students to graduate.
