Reaching New Heights... Latino Student Recruitment

Historically, the number of minority students on college campuses has been low, however, much is being done to change that. Latino students now make up 10% of the total enrollment in colleges 5. The college register, a group dedicated to increasing Latino enrollment, has assisted many colleges in increasing their Latino student enrollment 6. With the help of school counselors and the families of minority students, the University of Michigan has also designed many of their own minority recruitment programs. Since many of these programs first began, the Latino enrollment population has increased at the University of Michigan. Latino enrollment increased in 2003 from 255 students to 264 students in 2004.7 The university focuses on recruiting students from Michigan cities with large Latino communities such as Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Flint. Recruitment efforts are also expanded to other states across the nation. An important annual program is the Latino/a college visits. At this program, students are introduced to the University of Michigan with a series of presentations from the office of admissions, financial aid and the multi-ethnic student affairs (MESA). They also talk to a student panel and they are involved in a number of social events. Some other annual programs that are a component of recruitment efforts are the Slice of Life program, the Symposium, student call outs, and Spring Welcome Day. Ambassadors, University of Michigan students from many diverse backgrounds, even send hand-written holiday cards and post cards encourgaging students who have not yet applied to do so. 8

Statistics Did you know there are only two undergraduate students at the University of Michigan who are Latino Studies Concentrators 9. To see other interesting statistics click here.
