ARTEMISIA 1998 EXECUTIVE BOARD

KIRAN CHAUDHRI (Co-Coordinator)
Senior majoring in Organizational Studies and Political Science. She is currently a Resident Advisor for Cambridge House and has been active with Michigan League Programming, the Indian American Political Awareness Network, and has served as a volunteer conversation partner for the Michigan Language Center. She also interned for Congress and for the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee. She is looking forward to a career in marketing and eventually receiving her MBA. "I believe that feminism is about recognizing the unique gifts that women have to offer and putting these gifts to use. Feminism is not about the degredation of men. It is about understanding that while we are different, we are equal."

PUJA DHAWAN (Co-Coordinator)
Senior majoring in Political Science and Honor's Women's Studies. She is writing her Senior Thesis on women's economic development in rural India. She also served as co-chair of the MSA Women's Issues Commission for two years. After graduation, she plans on doing social work in India for a year and then attending law school to study international human rights. "I believe feminism is about enabling women to make the choices that are best for their lifestyles, and then supporting and celebrating those choices. I hope that Artemisia 1998 will similarly expose our students to the broad range of opportunities that are available to them, as well as recognize those women that have made these opportunities possible."

VALERIE PRESS (Fundraising Chair)
Alumna with a BS in Cellular and Molecular Biology and an BA in Women's Health. She is currently working as the Research Coordinator for the Women's Health Program at the University's Medical Center. "To me, feminism is simply my avenue of seeing through lenses that give me a heightened awareness of social issues, including injustices against women. However, more globally the lenses have brought me a sensitivity to any individual or group of people who have to navigate their live in a society offering unequal priveleges based on a status quo created by those in power a long, long time ago."

SHELBY BROWN
Senior majoring in History and Political Science. She served as the president of the Panhellenic Group last year and has been active in Chi Omega Fraternity and with the March of Dimes. "Always acting with compassion, determination, and strength: that is what is great about being a woman."

MADHAVI DANDU
Second year student in the University Medical School. She graduated from U of M in 1997 with a degree in Comparative Literature and Biomedical Studies. She is currently serving as the president of the U of M Chapter of the American Medical Women's Association and recently co-chaired the MedStart Conference on children's issues. "To me, feminism is about remembering the power of women's thoughts, voices, and stories. It is about race, religion, economics, politics, literature, beauty, strenght, wisdom, and everything else that drives the world. It is about celebrating diversity, unity, and life."

BRENNA DEVANEY
Senior majoring in Women's Studies and Political Science. Shh is currently the coordinator of the peer education program at SAPAC. She eventually hopes to end attend law school and study public interest law but she is "first taking some time off to learn more about the way the world works and how I can be a part of the solutions for issues that I care about." "I think feminism is... exciting, challenging, makes sense, and has given me some of the tools I need to use my voice."

SHANNON DONEGA
Senior in the School of Nursing. She is currently serving as the Co-coordinator of the peer education program at SAPAC and has been a member of the U of M's Women's Water Polo Team for the past three years. "This is not my feminist theory or what I think it is to be a feminist. This is the feeling that this conference, and any other event where women are coming together to plan something great, gives me. I believe that the most beautiful sound on this earth is the sound of womens voices coming together in defiance, in love, in strength, and in praise of each other. It is at those times when I am reminded of what it means to be a woman, and how incrediably brave we all are."

SHALONDA HUNTER
Junior majoring in Sociology and Urban Planning/ Development. She is currently a member of Delta Sigma Theta, a part of the Black Greek Association. She is also serving on the King, Chavez, Parks Program and the African American Task Force. "I became interested in working with this conference to expand my, as well as others, perceptions of issues that affect women. I truly believe that women are direct messengers from God sent to heal the wombs of the world. Womanhood is the fabric from which we all have been created. As women, we should cherish, love, and protect our individualism, strength, and outstanding expressions of God shining through!"

YVONNE LIM
Pre-dental senior majoring in Biology and Music. She is currently serving as an Resident Advisor for Helen Newberry Residence Hall. She is planning on attending attend dental school in the fall. "I think feminism is important because it helps women realize their full potential; it allows women to be anything they want to become as long as they have the dream."

SONALI MISHRA
Senior majoring in English Literature and is interested primarily in the art fields. She has studied Indian classical dance for 17 years. She also writes fiction and hopes to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts in Creating Writing. "I believe that feminism is a matter of re-defining ourselves as women and to challenge the expectations people have of us and aim for something higher."

FIONA ROSE
Senior majoring in Classical Archaeology. She spent last summer excavating in Pompeii, Italy, and will continue her studies in archaeology at Oxford University in England next year, as a Rhodes Scholar. Outside of academics, Rose has been active in campus politics. She served on the Michigan Student Assembly (MSA) - U of M's central student government - for three years, including one as student body president. Rose is particularly proud of her work on the University's Child Care Task Force, which for the past year has pushed for better, more affordable child care for the students, staff, and faculty at the U of M campus. She was also selected in 1997 by Glamour Magazine as a "Woman of the Year"

ELIZABETH SOMSEL
Pre-med junior majoring in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Medieval and Renaissance Studies. For the moment, she is concentrating on getting into medical school and working with the League Programming Office, but finds time in between to volunteer at Mott Children's Hospital and as a peer advisor in the International Center. "To me, feminism is simply about being female. That in itself provides a common bond that unites woman around the world, transcending cultural, social, and racial boundaries."
