The Michigan League
Site of Artemisia 1998
We thought it fitting to hold "Artemisia 1998"
at the Michigan League since the building was originally built for
University of Michigan Women.
The Michigan League has a rich and significant history. In 1921, the
University Alumnae Council resolved to raise funds for a building that
would become a center for women's social, cultural, and recreational
activities since women were denied the use of the Michigan Union at that
time. Through the tireless efforts and perseverance of undergraduate
women and alumnae, one million dollars was raised for the building. In
May of 1929, the Michigan League was officially opened.
The evolution of the University community created a change of mission for
the Michigan League. In 1965, the student programming bodies from the Michigan Union and the
Michigan League women became one under the
University Activities Center. No longer the center of women student
activities, the League emerged as an ideal place for seminars,
conferences, and receptions serving the University as well as the
community. Thus the League reestablished itself as a vital part of the
University.
In 1993, the Michigan League became a part of the Division of Student
Affairs. With this move, the League one again began playing an important
role in the student life on campus. Presently, the Michigan League is one
of the three University Unions (along with the Michigan Union and
Pierpont Commons) serving the students, faculty, staff,
alumni, as well as the community.
The Michigan League Programming Office is now the central entity in the
League catering to student life. The Office was established in order to
enhance the quality of life at the University by implementing social,
educational, and cultural activities.
