Word-Guessing The use of reading material heavily laden with pictures at early reading stages sometimes facilitates the latent effect of children's learning to read by word guessing (Wise, 2005; Hiebert, 1998). Instead of learning to read the words presented to them on a page or screen, children will "read" the pictures or animation. The picture, rather than the words, provides the content of children's understanding (Hiebert, 1998). When these children are later introduced to texts with minimal or no pictures, they may begin to feel that the reading material is too difficult for them to read (Wise, 2005). This website uses both pictures and text to narrate a story. The vocabulary used in the telling of the story, however, encourages children's mastery of them out of context as children recall earlier vocabulary for use in later games. Use of reading skills is further encouraged by the story's oral narration. Children may follow along with the story in the same manner that they would when being read to by an adult.
