J/A Film Wars

These are the Japanese and English version books based on Media Wars: Then & Now, a catalog for the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival.

The event was a retrospective of Pacific War films commemorating the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The war was an extremely delicate topic, so few of these films had seen the light of a projector for half a century. The event drew the interest of a slate of intellectuals like Tsurumi Shunsuke, Kogawa Tetsuo, Ueno Toshiya, Michael Renov and others. They all offered to contribute articles and the catalog grew to book-length. It was a powerful experience that led me to write and teach about war cinema ever since. Co-edited with Fukushima Yukio.
