  • Hi Simon: I've been keeping up with all you and your family are going through and for what it's worth, I think you are all doing a fine job!
Something interesting happened that I thought you would appreciate. I teach martial arts - not competitively, but in a really healing, natural way that's directed very much by the energy of heaven. On Friday morning, I was teaching a group of kids who have a lot of troubles and are doing a good job making their lives better. To help them out, we do alot of martial art movement that keeps their blood flowing, gives them a positive attitude and helps them find their balance. Our movement includes alot of circles and straight lines. And out of the blue on Friday, although it seemed quite obvious in the moment, I compared the movements they were doing and the energy they needed to really create it correctly to the movement of the wheels of a locomotive! may seem like a silly connection to what you said to your mom in a sleepy state on Thursday and probably don't even remember... BUT, I was teaching between heaven and earth at the time - so I thought at the very least it was a big smile. Love is everywhere Simon! Keep up the good work!
    - (your mom's old roommate - whose name changed, but I don't think your mom knows that!)

  • Hey Simon,

Dylan and I were just thinking about you. He asked me if you got the heart that he made for you. When I told him that you were in the Hospital having a special treatment to help make you better, He said that they could give you his Boo-Boo patches (Emla Cream) so that it wouldn't hurt. He also hopes that your mommy is holding your hand just like I do his when he has to have his I.V.'s. His next treatment is on the 11th of Sept. Nice thought Huh? We think about you and your family alot. We hope that all continues to go smoothly and thatyou get to start Kindergarden real soon.

Love to you all, Deidre & Dylan

  • You are really progressing with your stem cell "rescue," aren't you, Simon! I like the idea that your *own* stem cells were "rescued" out of your body in February and now, after having been cleaned up and frozen all those months (in garlicy/creamed-corn-smelling stuff?!?) are now "rescuing" you from the effects of those nasty but oh-so-helpful medicines that were pumped into your body recently! It's all *very* amazing, even if it's also uncomfortable at times (especially with that diarrhea thing going on -- good thing your parents are quick on their feet! ;-). You and your family and doctors and nurses are all doing a *great* job, Simon!

Well, since it's raining here today (hooray for an end to the drought!), I'm going to tell you a rainy-day joke: At the end of a full and exciting day of Kindergarten a little boy was struggling to put on a pair of boots so he could go home. His teacher came over to give him a hand and had a struggle of her own (you see, the boots were a bit too small...). When those stubborn golashes were finally on his feet, the little boy looked up at his teacher and said, "These aren't my boots." So, smiling (a bit) and taking a deep breath, the teacher pulled and tugged and stuggled and strained and *finally* got them off again, panting a bit with the exertion, at which point the boy said matter-of-factly, "They're my sister's, but my mom said I should wear them today anyway." ;-)

Lots of good, healing thoughts coming your way from Upstate New York! Love, Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura

  • You guys are amazing! Just *thinking* about all the stuff you're keeping track of, all day, every day, is making my head spin.... But if any family can get through this with its collective sense of humor intact, I know it will be yours! ;-)

I have no jokes for you today, but here's a great image for you: On Wednesday Dan got his new sneakers for school. He tried on one pair and kind of gallumphed up and down the aisle of the shoe department, looking sad and dejected (and I'm thinking to myself: those probably aren't his favorite shoes...). Then he tried on another pair and began racing around the racks at top speed, stopping periodically to play an imaginary game of basketball with an obviously formidable opponent -- you could tell because there was lots of faking to the left and faking to the right before he bounded off again to jump up and perform some aerial maneuvers before slam-dunking the ball! I got thinking, Simon, of the new shoes you got a while ago that had all that cancer-fighting magic in them, and I said to myself with a smile: "Man, what a difference a pair of shoes can make!" :-)

You may not be able to wear those shoes much in the hospital; but I'll bet each time you've had them on your feet, the magic was being absorbed steadily by your toes and was spreading slowly throughout your whole body -- it's probably part of the reason your surgery was so successful earlier this summer! And even now, that magic is deep within you, doing its thing along with the medicines you're taking, to send those last cancer cells packing -- yahoo!!!

We're thinking of all of you, and wishing you all the best in this latest leg of your journey. Love, Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura

We are still here in the White mountanins of New Hampshire visiting Lawrie's family. The kids just spotted a Great Blue Heron down by the pond. It and has now flown away and the kids are getting ready to go down to the pond to investigate for foot prints. Just a few minutes ago we were having a great time reading all the jokes from other people's messages
Ryan, Madi and Lexi's cousin has a riddle for you.

If a guy leaves on a horse on Friday how does he get back two days later on Friday? . . .

    His horse is named "Friday"

Here is another one from Madi and Lexi's other cousin Megan(that I am afraid we have heard one too many times this week)
    Knock, knock
    Who's there?
    Mickey Mouses underwear.

We love you very much and are holding you all in our thoughts and prayers as you approach/wait for this next phase of treatment.

  • Here is another of Tommy's favorite bedtime stories when he was Simon's age: The Golden Boy
By Joan Curran-Ellsworth and Tommy Ellsworth

Once upon a time there was a fountain in the middle of a park in the middle of a great city. On the top of that fountain there was a golden boy with little wings who, when he laughed his silvery laugh, lifted the hearts of everyone who heard him. Of course, the people did not know what it was that made them feel that way, they only thought it was the pleasant sound of the water, but it was the boy just the same.

Once every month, at the dark of the moon, the boy could come down from his fountain and go about among the people around the park from dusk until dawn. He listened to their thoughts and did what he could to help them. On this particular night, the first thing he heard was a little girl crying. The child had wandered away from her family and gotten lost on the winding trails of the park. The golden boy flew just ahead of her on the path and laughed his silvery laugh. The little girl followed the sound as the golden boy led her to a friendly policeman patrolling the park on his horse. The policeman took the girl up in front of him and they rode together until the family was found. The reunion was so happy that the little girl forgot her plan to scold her parents for getting lost.

The next thoughts the golden boy heard were that of a man walking home from work. The man had worked very hard and was very, very tired. He was so weary that he could hardly put one foot in front of another. The golden boy came up behind him and lifted him up by the shoulders of his overcoat. The man’s feet did not quite come off the ground, but his step was light and before he knew it, he was at his own front door. “Home already!” the man thought with surprise and relief. And the golden boy whispered in his ear with a voice so light that the man believed it was his own thoughts. “I think I’ll have a sandwich and take a hot bath and then go right to bed.” And the man went inside to make this cozy plan happen.

The golden boy flew back to the park and heard the thoughts of a woman who was waiting for a bus. The woman was very worried. She was worried about having enough money to buy clothes and shoes and enough good things to eat for her children. Her job did not pay her very much and she had to try hard every day to make ends meet. The golden boy pricked up his ears for a minute and then he laughed his silvery laugh so that the woman followed the sound without knowing what she was doing. He led her to one of the big fancy houses that stood on the edge of the park. She walked up the stairs to the front door, rang the bell and said the words that the golden boy whispered in her ear.

    “I’ve come to help.”

“Oh thank goodness,” said the woman who opened the door. “The agency said they couldn’t send anyone on such short notice. Please come in.”

And the woman came in and helped with the work of a giving a fancy party. After the party was done, the hostess thanked her for doing such good work and asked if she would be willing to come again. Then she paid the woman for her help and bid her to take home any of the extra food if she wanted it.
The extra food and money were not so much as to make the woman’s troubles all go away, but they were enough to make her worries fade and give her a feeling of hope, and with that, anything is possible. This was the true gift of the golden boy. His magic wasn’t really so very strong; it just opened the door so that hope could come in.

The golden boy’s night was almost up and so he flew back toward the fountain in the park, listening as he went. He had just time enough to help a young couple sitting at either end of a park bench. The sweethearts had said some very angry words to each other, but now they were all done being mad and were remembering how much they loved each other. Neither one knew how to stop the mad and start speaking to each other again until the golden boy whispered into the air and they both said, “I’m sorry.” at the exact same time and put their arms around each other.

And then the golden boy returned to his fountain until the time when he could come down among the people again. He laughed his silvery laugh and spread the sound of laughter and little silver bells and water splashing and music.

Why do elephants wear sandals at the beach?
(To keep from getting buried in the sand) Not very funny yet....but....

Why do ostriches bury their heads in the sand??
(To look for elephants that forgot to wear their sandals!)
We also had the one about "swimming trunks" in our box...hope all goes well with your tests and you get to the transplant soon. Kindergarten calls!!

  • So it's jokes you want, eh?? Good thing Danny's been saving them up again, just for you!

Q: What do you get when you cross a fish with an elephant?
    A: Swimming trunks!

    Q: What's an alien's favorite dish?
    A: A flying saucer!

    And here's a sort of a riddle:

Q: You're in a dark room with only one match. There is a candle, some logs in a fireplace, a stove, and a lantern. What do you light first? (The answer's at the bottom of this message, so you can really *think* about it before I give away the answer....)

Have fun laughing up a storm! And if you see a *real* storm, send it our way, will you?? We've had so little rain here, we're just sittin' around waitin' for our well to run dry.... The kids are happy, though, because it means Mom's not always after them to take baths and flush the toilet! (P.U., we stink!) ;-)

And now back to that riddle.... A: The match! ;-)

  • Hi Simon!

We've been watching this web site continually since we arrived in
San Antonio. We have been so busy unpacking, settling into our new neighborhood, and preparing for the Marina's baby sister.

We are so happy to hear that the surgery went well and keep you and your family always in our thoughts.

Marina is now a big sister!!!!!

Jane Maria Schwadron was born on
Wednesday August 7th at 2:18pm after
two days of "false (yeah right)" labor
and 16 hours of active labor.
A successful VBAC!!! We are all extremely happy (but very sore)!!!

Marina is still getting used to a
    baby sister. She definitely needs
some advice from a pro like you.

    We'd love to talk...

    210 492-3474

All the best this week as you
return to the hospital. Marina is
    convinced that hospitals have the
best pudding in the entire universe...

    We miss you!

    Love,
    Kathy, Nathan, Marina
    and Janie

  • Hey Simon! i am so impressed with you and how well you are doing! we just read about your surgery, and how brave you and your mom and dad were through the whole thing. We wish we were there to spend time with you, but we send hugs through the internet. They might get a bit squished on the way there, but ask your mom to unsquish them for us, ok?

    lots of love,
    Anne, Tom and Johannes

  • Hello Simon and everyone. Just wanted to say hello and let you know I am thinking of you. I am busy getting ready for the fall with new shelves and bookcases for all the art supplies for my new class. I will be on vacation at lake superior next week, so I will not be able to check in and see how you are doing with stem cell procedure, but I will be thinking extra hard and sending prayers too. Big kiss MWA! to you and hugs to all. Much love, Gari

  • simon,

Wondered how your appetite is are you feeling hungrier these days. We roasted marshmellows last weekend and thought of our great time together on the beach at Lake Michigan. Can you still call it a beach even if it's on a lake? We will sure be thinking of you and your whole family as you embark on the stem cell treatment. Was so much fun to see you.

    Love, Annette

  • This message is for Pilot Simon -

I just looked at the pictures from your visit to Oberlin when you went riding in a plane with my brother. You look ready to fly that plane!

You'll have to convince Miriam how much fun the flying in a small plane was - particularly since she's been out to Utah now in a real BIG one!

Sarah and Erickson remember going for a ride with Uncle Geoff on the very same day!

    Good night -
    Erik

  • Hey Simon -

On my way back to Maryland this evening, I flew right by Ann Arbor and I thought immediately of you! By looking at the current news, I'm sure you're doing super. A special treat to get out and see so many cousins and friends this past week.
We'll keep you in our prayers as your big day of August 15th nears. Say hi to Aunt Julie for me next time you see her!

    God bless -
    Erik
