The Ross School of Business (University of Michigan) Pays Tribute to Simon

Celebrate the Life of Simon

On October 13, 2004 members of the recently renamed University of Michigan Business School community will pay tribute to Simon. Former colleagues of Markus and Mary and friends of the whole family have teamed up to raise awareness and celebrate Simon's life. From 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on Wednesday, they will give away popcorn and share stories about Simon in the Student Lounge of the Business School. All are welcome!

About Simon's Place
If you are just learning about Simon for the first time, please feel free to browse this extensive Web site. His journey through cancer was filled with the wonderful and the harsh. Along the way, he has taught us all so much.

Here are a few quick links within the site to get you going.

  • Simon Craig Vodosek Memorial Fund
We are building a fund to sponsor family activities that celebrate Simon's joyful spirit. The first event brings Ann Arbor musicians, Gemini, to Salt Lake City for a 3-day residency. We'd be honored to have your support!

  • The World According to Simon
Simon is immortalized in his own words in the SIMON SAYS pages.

  • Tributes to Simon
Poems, drawings, memories, and other celebrations of Simon's life are posted here. If you want to add a tribute, please send it to

  • Photos of Simon's cancer journey
We also recommend clicking on Simon's photo on the Main Page of this site for a look at all the photos of Simon posted in that spot since January 2002.

You can still let us know you're thinking about Simon and the rest of us by writing to us here!

  • Explore using the menu at the side of each page. The section called SIMON'S LEGACY is the newest one, and we are building it with information about his memorial service, his obituary, the memorial fund, etc. We are also placing updates on the WHAT'S HAPPENING page. If you are looking for an overview of Simon's life with cancer and all the treatment he underwent, the best reference is the WHAT'S HAPPENING Archive, which appears at the bottom of each page in that section. (The TREATMENT page is less current.)

Our history with the Ross School of Business
Markus was a Ph.D. student and lecturer at the University of Michigan Business School from 1995-2003. He received his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior in June of 2003. Markus was on the academic job market in December of 2001 when we learned that Simon had cancer. The Business School community rallied around our family, and Markus was able to stay on an additional year as a lecturer so that Simon could complete the main phase (we hoped) of his treatment there. The University of Utah School of Business accommodated our situation by offering Markus a year's deferment.

Prior to finding her "dream job" as the founding director of UM's Arts at Michigan program, Mary also worked at the University of Michigan Business School. In 1995-1996 she was an executive assistant at the William Davidson Institute. Her friends from that first job in Ann Arbor have stayed faithfully supportive of our family ever since.
