Tuesday, June 12  Write a brief description of your mathematics background. Include the last two math classes you took and when you took them. How do you feel about mathematics? What do you like about studying mathematics, and what do you dislike? What are you hoping to get from our class?

Monday, June 18  Question 1: Suppose you start with 1000 bacteria in a petri dish. If the number of bacteria doubles every 3 days, how many bacteria do you have after 14 days? Question 2: Section 6.5 problem 8. Does your answer agree with the data? If not, what are some possible reasons why not? (Hint: when we model the US population as an exponential function, we’re assuming that p’(t) is roughly proportional to p(t), where p(t) is the US population at time t, and where t is any number between 1790 and 2000. Is this a reasonable assumption to make? Come up with possible reasons why not)

Question 2: Read the following articles: The secret to raising smart kids, The state of being stuck Write a brief (<1 page) reflective essay about these articles. If you don't know what to write, try addressing the following questions: Is there anything in these articles that resonated with you? Is there anything in these articles you disagree with? Is there anything in these articles you found surprising? Do you think you have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset when it comes to people’s math abilities? Do you want to change your mindset about math? What are some concrete strategies you can use to accomplish this?
