  • Hi Simon,
I just got back to Ann Arbor from a trip to Long Beach California. We flew in the plane right over your house. I was thinking about you and waved. I wonder if you saw me? I heard a funny joke while I was in California and thought you might enjoy it. Q: "Why did the belt get arrested? A: For holding up a pair of pants" That's all for now, Beth

  • A quick "hello" to all of you. We enjoyed the pictures of the Cousins a lot - it set us off thinking about many cousin stories from our own families (like the time my cousin fed me crabapples until I got sick, or Paul and his cousins falling into a lake from a rope swing). The picture wall idea is great, and we just got a new digital camera, so very soon now we'll be sending in our contribution. We surely are thinking of you, and it will be fun for us to put that into a picture!

    Till soon,
    Marta, Paul and Sam

  • Hi everyone,

Still not internet service at our house. We are officially extremely disappointed with our DSL line service provider, Qwest. They promised to send a tech to fix the problem by noon on Saturday. It's midnight on Sunday, and we are still toast.

Things are otherwise going OK. I truly hope to be able to work with the Web site again soon.

  • Simon and family,
We had a great day today and you all were on our brains and in our hearts the whole time. We were preparing for and putting on our first "Alex's Lemonade Stand in honor of Simon, Alex and all kids fighting cancer" We did it together with Amy and Sally in front of our PCC (Puget Sound Consumer Coop grocery store) The girls shopped for the suppies (which we got donated thanks to Safeway) and decorated a banner. Amy made a fabulous donation jar and special sign and Sally made a wonderful poster board of photos of Simon (and Miriam) from your website. Amy, Lexi and Madi were a good team. We made $183.00 dollars.

Even though we are far away know that we are holding you close in our thoughts day and night (and the girls wish they could come over for a play date along with Miguel tomorrow.)
--we are with you in spirit

    love,

  • Hello everyone!

We are having an annoying lapse in our internet service, so we aren't able to do a lot of the things we're used to doing. We've been told a tech will be out to the house by noon tomorrow. Better be!

Simon is spending his days watching movies, sleeping, listening to stories like Junie B. Jones and Captain Underpants, and resting. He has been quite withdrawn the past few days. He seems to be having less pain shoot through, but he's had an upset stomach and doesn't feel much like eating or drinking.

Fortunately, his electrolytes seem to be getting back in balance.

He has a playdate planned for tomorrow morning with Miguel. Usually, that's terrific medicine. We hope it perks him up tomorrow!

Keep the photo greetings coming in. A few have made it onto the Web site in the STORIES FOR SIMON section. As I said, with our internet service down (boo hiss), it's hard to do much.

I managed to get in on Markus' computer via a dial-up modem. For whatever reason, my own computer can't dial in.

Trying to keep the computer frustration thing in perspective,

    Mary

I see I have lots of news to catch up on. I've been busy learning to teach English, American studies and literature to Uzbek university students . Haven't been doing much e-mail or internet. I really miss you guys. I see things have been tough a lot lately. But lots of wonderful moments too. I love your spirit, and get nostalgic thinking about the fun moments we all had. I think I'll go shopping in a couple of days and see if I can find some different surprises. No Junie B. Jones in Tashkent, but maybe some weird candy. Hang in there you all and continue to enjoy the good moments, as you so obviously do. Much love always, Connie

Simon, the pictures of you as Captain Underpants are fabulous. Our son Lewis (almost 5) loves Captain Underpants and I think I will look for Junie B. Jones at the library for him next. Right now we are reading Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books (do you remember those from the Oberlin Public Library, Mary?).
    Love to all of you.

  • How fun to read about old friends from high school. Mary, Sarah, Emily, Joan, Janie - if you remember I never took French because I knew there were colleges out there that didn't require a language, so therefore I didn't require a language. Ah, the wisdom of youth... Anyway, I loved seeing the connection to Sarah (Sarah, you haven't changed a bit, except for the MD following your name!), and the quick trip down memory lane.

Simon, hang in there. I'm sure you're enjoying Grann's visit - she's a special lady and you're lucky to have her. I send you prayers for happy, pain-free days, and a hope that the doctors can come up with some options that work for you. You have SO MANY people out here who love you and would do anything to be able to help. I hope that gives you comfort and strength.

    Love, Jean

  • In answer to Kris and Laura Hopkins, Simon has lost 5 teeth so far, all since January. We just read the "Toothless Wonder" story a couple of days ago. AND Junie B. Jones HERSELF just came to our local bookstore to do a show for families. She had a trunk full of stuff that she pulled out to show us. She was hilarious. Afterwards, some kids waited in a long line to get their photo taken with Junie B. We left because we were too pooped. Junie B. travels in her Stupid Smelly Bus all over the place to visit with kids.

We are really lucky to have a terrific, ecclectic, independent bookstore in Salt Lake City called The King's English. Perhaps the best part about this bookstore for us is that it is just around the corner from our house, and we can wander over any time we like.

  • I've been out of touch for way too long -- so much is happening in your lives! There have been birthdays, and terrific updates to Simon Says, and worries about pain and disease progression, and fun playing baseball *and* (I saved the best for last, 'cause this is Laura's favorite!) Junie B. Jones books! We just LOVE June B. at our house, too. Laura really liked the one about the "Toothless Wonder" -- have you read that one yet? Laura's recently lost a tooth or two, so that subject was a big hit. How 'bout you guys -- any loose teeth at your house? Have your *kitties* had any loose teeth?? I remember when I was 8 my kitten lost a tooth, and I made sure to put it under his bed for the Tooth Fairy to find!

We're thinking about all of you -- a lot -- and wishing you painfree days, Simon, as well as wonderfully restorative naps, and tons of fun with visiting relatives and friends.

Sending you lots of love and warm thoughts,

Simon, we read your comment that the cancer is "serious work", and we just really wanted to say that we have so much admiration for you and what a fantastically good worker you have been. Doing what you have to to fight the cancer, learning to read, making friends, being a brother, being funny and honest and not like anybody else in the world - that is quite a set of accomplishments for a guy as young as yourself! (I know lots of grownups who do a lot less . . .) Get plenty of rest, and we hope it helps to know that your big audience of fans is out here rooting for you.

  • Hi, Simon
Just wanted to say hi from England andwish you happy birthday for last month and your mom for yesterday. Hope it was a great cake!
You have been doing such a fantastic job recently, being really strong and brave through a lot of different medicines and hospital visits. I'm always amazed by how well you cope and also by all the other activities you fit in! Congratulations on finishing first grade. Susie too has almost finished, and also she has just learned to ride her bike and started the violin - just like Miriam. Mary you are in for a 'treat' when you have two new violinists practising at home!!!!!
I was thriled to learn that you love to read, Simon as it is Susies favourite activity. She can spend hours curled up on the couch with a good book. As you are having lots of sleepy rests at the moment it sounds like you could do with some new good books. Susie, Amie and I will pick out some of their favourites to send you. so hope your pain and tiredness goes away very soon, but meanwhile enjoy those naps!
    lots of love from

  • Hi. Simon. I read that Miriam has begun to play the violin and that may be you do too. I started playing the violin in October. It is a fun instrument if you play music that is fun. My friends and I have a band that plays music for contra dances. We are playing for a dance on this Saturday in Ann Arbor. I play guitar in that band but there are violin (fiddle) players in the band too. I always liked their playing and so I finally decided to try playing the violin. I think it is fun. My teacher's name is Pam Meisel and she lives in Ann Arbor too. On thursdays I leave work just a little early so I can drive home and get my violin and go to Pam's house to play. May be you will feel like trying to play music when you feel better. Love Quentin.

I have recently realized that checking the website and message board are as big a part of my morning routine as reading the SL Trib online and checking my email! You (Simon) are so lucky to have so many fans and people who love you! (I've just never posted because I didn't want to make your out-of-town friends jealous that we get to hang out with you and Miriam! Oh yeah, and your parents too. :->)

To Rachael re: lemonade stand...I have an idea - how about setting up at the Farmers Market on Sat.? There were tons of people there Saturday, and since there's no produce to speak of yet, the arts/crafts vendors like me were very busy. Email me...

  • I'm responding to Rachael Coleman's post about Alex and the Lemonade Stand. We are "friends" of Alex and her parents via a very active listserv for neuroblastoma families. Everyone is so excited about her amazing initiative and increasing celebrity.

It's wonderful that you are planning to do lemonade stands. We had hoped to help out with having a stand in Utah, but Simon is definitely not feeling up to that kind of activity right now, and the rest of us are too singleminded with his care to do anything "extra".

Alex has the same type of cancer as Simon, and she has been hacking away at it for 7 years. She was diagnosed just before turning 1, and now she's 8.

On another note, Rachael, you are the first person in 2.5 years to make me aware of that weird feature of how the URL hyperlinks your name. It's not what I expected either. Maybe I'll ask my Web-guy buddy. And maybe I'll just let it go.

For those from Oberlin, I did a double-take, too, because we all know a Rachael Coleman who went through school a couple of years ahead of me.

Rachael from SLC, we're looking forward to connecting with you here. We didn't make it to church today--too much medical this and that to attend to.

  • Hi Simon!
Hope you had a good weekend. I found this article about an eight year old girl named Alex with neuroblastoma like you. She wanted to raise a million dollars for cancer research and decided to do it by having lemonade stands. Now people all over the country have lemonade stands and donate all the money to cancer research. Maybe we can have some lemonade stands here in Salt Lake next weekend too. My son August is going to New York to stay with his family next week and says he's going to have a lemonade sale there. Maggie and I will have one at our house kind of near the Albertson's at 9th &amp 17th. We will send all the money we make to Alex to help her reach her million dollar goal.

  • Dear Simon: I'm a friend of your grandmother and grandfather in Oberlin, and I knew your mama when she was a little girl. After I read about all the hamburgers you've been eating, I thought you might like to hear about the owls in our woods. Every night at dusk the begin calling to each other. It sounds like they are saying WHO COOKS FOR YOU, WHO COOKS FOR YOU ALL. These are barred owls, and they have big dark eyes. If your mama and daddy have a bird book, you can see what they look like. I don't think barred owls cook hamburgers, but you never can tell. I hope tomorrow is a good day. Karan

  • Simon,

Bet your cousins are visiting now? Hope your pain is less today. Rowan would love to play some computer games with you. Wish we were closer. Rowan too is convinced that guitar and drums are where it's at. He has started guitar lessons but the acoustic guitar doesn't guite get the same enthusiasm as watching the middle schoolers play electric guitar in the rock band. But I tell him you have to learn how to play first before you can get that electirc guitar to do what you want. We have a very special activity planned tonight. We are going to see the Musical The Lion King. Wish you and Miraim could come with us. We bought our tickets 6 months ago and the date has finally arrived.

We send all our love to you and your family. love you tons! A, S, R

  • Lieber Simon!

    Bussirene

Oh we DO wish we could fly over to your house for a play date! It was good to hear your request when I was talking to your mom tonight.

  • Hi Simon! I read the goobly-gook message from your Mom - boy was that confusing! The one thing I did understand was that you may be coming to Los Angeles for some special medicine. If you do come to Los Angeles that is pretty close to where we live and fairly close to Legoland too. We look forward to going to Legoland with you and your family. There are a lot of people where we live who are working on finding new medicines for curing cancer. And they are smart people too. I am sure before too long you will find the right medicine to kick the cancer out! Tell your Mom and Dad to let us know if you will be coming out here to Southern California so we can get ready for Legoland! We look forward to reading about your fun summer activites and congratulations on finishing first grade! Love, Marcie, David, Rachel and Noah

  • Simon,

Congratulations on finishing 1st grade. That is a really big step. When our son, Sam, was in 1st grade, it seemed to me it was a year that he went from being a little kid to being a big kid - whole days in school, learning, making friends, and finding out how much he could do all by himself. It sounds like you learned to do a whole lot - nice going.

We had a surprising experience a couple weeks ago. There was a really big storm in Ann Arbor, and we had more rain in a shorter time that ever before. The Huron River flooded, flowing out of its banks in many places, including in our back yard. We had a really big, moving lake in our back yard -- all the grass was covered for yards and yards, and the water was so deep that a grown up wading was up to his or her knees. I think the size of it was more than 1/2 a football field. We got some ducks swimming in our back yard, which we thought was very cute. And then we noticed that there was something else - something in the water - and we were seeing more and more movement. It turned out that we had hundreds (I really think so) of carp, swimming in our back yard! They were big, too. I estimate they were 15 or 20 pounds each. And I gotta tell you - a Huron River carp is an ugly fish! I was worried that they wouldn't know how to get back to the river when the waters went down, but I should have known that creatures are a lot smarter than that -even carp! After about 4 days, the water levels dropped (because it stopped raining) and the water from our yard drained back into the river, and the fish went back with it. It was exciting, but I was relieved to see them go.

We look forward to reading about your summer, and we are really hoping the treatments will keep the cancer in check so you can have some fun.

    Love from all,
Marta, Paul and Sam (the very grown up boy)

  • Hi there! I haven't been able to check your site in a while because Rob and I were in England and had no computer (and not even any time to look for one of those internet cafes, as it turned out). Didn't get to see the Queen, but did see some of her guards (and some beautiful horses!) at Buckingham Palace! Also saw Big Ben and lots of other wonderful sites. Even walked up ~530 steps to reach an upper area of the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral (which they show in Mary Poppins, if you've ever seen that movie...)! It was a lot of fun, but we're glad to be back home again. Do you ever feel that way after a great trip?

Glad to hear many of your counts are doing well, Simon. And we'll keep thinking positive thoughts about those that still need a little more help. But great news about finishing up 1st grade in fine style! Reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic are all pretty cool, aren't they!

    Take care,

    Kris, etc.

Please count me among the many who hold you in their hearts. My kids are at Ann Arbor Open School where Simon was last year. I'm so glad to hear he's had a joyful first grade year!
