These are images the girls can really get into -- they said "we can definately help!!" "We can think about those pictures in our heads and saying Simon's name at the same time!!" Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Would you give everybody a big hug from all of us? We will be in Portland-- where your mom and dad used to live before you and Miriam were born. We look forward to hearing about how you like Kindergarden in the classroom verses your living room. We love you and continue to hold you all gently in our thoughts and prayers, Madi, Lexi, Lawrie and Curt Monday, November 25, 2002 -- 21:49:02 (EST) Name: Rebecca -- Email: rebecca37cross@hotmail.com Location: Oberlin, OH USA It was wonderful to speak to you all on the phone last week; Schuyler & Emma (and Randy & I) are all happily awaiting your Thanksgiving visit to Oberlin. Schuyler will be pleased to tell you how much fun he's been having in kindergarten. Yay, Simon!!! See you soon, Rebecca, Emma, Schuyler & Randy Sunday, November 24, 2002 -- 22:07:28 (EST) Name: Lee Williams Saturday, November 23, 2002 -- 10:45:34 (EST) Name: Markus Vodosek -- Email: markvodo@umich.edu Location: Ann Arbor, MI One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm, a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, “Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?” His mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. “I can’t dear,” she said. “I have to sleep in Daddy’s room.” A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice: “The big sissy.” (From Metro Parent magazine 10/02 via Memo from Michigan’s Department of Community Health) Friday, November 22, 2002 -- 11:19:21 (EST) Name: AS&R Location: Oakland, CA What great news that you may be going to kindergarten at the Public School after Thanksgiving. That is right around the corner. Sounds like you might be going to Oberlin for Thanksgiving say hi to your Gran and Grandpa from us. I like thinking of Norm pouring that Liquid Nitrogen right on cue every day at 11:00 a.m. It would be great if you all could come out and enjoy the laguna house this winter when it gets real cold in Ann Arbor. We love you, AS&R Thursday, November 21, 2002 -- 14:07:07 (EST) Name: Sally Location: Seattle, ` love, Sally and all Wednesday, November 20, 2002 -- 17:55:45 (EST) Name: Jean watson -- Email: jl_watson100@hotmail.com Location: Dover, OH USA A quick addition to your joke list: Q: What did the baby digital clock say to his Mommy? A: "Look Ma! No hands!" Enjoy! Jean Saturday, November 16, 2002 -- 23:47:36 (EST) Name: Steve Robertson -- Email: stevemeg@usfamily.net Location: St. Paul, Minnesota USA I knew your Mom when we were both little and even though I haven’t seen her in a long time, I have been thinking about you quite a bit lately. I expect you are glad to be out of the hospital. My son was sick kind of like you are and he hated being in the hospital. When he was there he wouldn’t eat any of the hospital food and we had to bring in food from home! Will is better now and we very much hope you will be soon. Then you can forget about hospitals. I enjoyed reading about your wish with the Make-A-Wish foundation. With all the Playmobil toys you have, you must be the King of Playmobil! It sounds like a nice wish to me, because those toys help to keep you happy. My son’s wish was to go to a concert in Georgia (where they grow lots of peaches, his favorite fruit). Another cool wish I heard about was that young girl got to run an ice cream truck for a day. She was too young to drive it, but she got to hand out free ice cream everywhere they went! Mostly, I wanted you and your family to know we are holding you in our hearts, and think of you often. Simon sounds like he is dealing with things remarkably well! Also, congratulations on your anniversary. The photo brought back wonderful memories of your wedding. Was it really ten years ago? Take care. Love, Mark and Caroline Tuesday, November 12, 2002 -- 11:23:09 (EST) Name: Lee Monday, November 11, 2002 -- 20:20:04 (EST) Name: Julie Dybdahl -- Email: Juliedybdahl@aol.com Location: Ann Arbor, Saturday, November 09, 2002 -- 01:54:29 (EST) Name: annette is home now and that you all can be nearer by. We never would have believed this kind of procedure would have been possible a few years ago. We will be hoping for the best news possible when he has the scans now and in Jan. Sorry about the dragon fly sure bet giving that up was a metaphor for what Simon had to put up with. We love you all, annette Wednesday, November 06, 2002 -- 15:24:47 (EST) Name: Kris Hopkins -- Email: khopkins@mail.colgate.edu Location: Clinton, NY USA That physical isolation thing doesn't sound like so much fun, Simon; but it's kind of amazing that the doctors can put special radioactive stuff in you so that you're sort of like Superman or something! Maybe when you're done with the treatments you'll be "Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound --- 'Look, up in the sky,' 'It's a bird,' 'It's a plane,' 'It's ... Super Simon!' " ;-) Just in case you all need some new jokes to get you through this next rough patch (although with all the great knock-knock's being provided lately, you seem fairly well supplied! ;-), here's a fresh batch from Danny. And he just bought a new collection of jokes through his Scholastic book order, so we may have another bunch for you soon enough.... Q: Why did the grasshopper go the the doctor? A: Because he was feeling jumpy! Q: Why did the dog jump in the pond? A: Because it was trying to catch a catfish! (And, for you mini-golf fans out there...) Q: Why did the golfer wear two pairs of pants? A: In case he got a hole in one.... Also, I saw a neat story about a 6-year-old girl who has neuroblastoma and who decided to help raise money for research for *all* different kinds of cancer, not just hers (wow -- talk about altruism!). She started a lemonade stand and is sending the money she makes to different groups that are working to find cures for cancer! Already she's raised -- are you ready for this? -- $18,000! In case you haven't seen it, I'll send you guys the story, and also an article I saw that made me think of you. In the meantime, Simon, I know you'll be really good at "feeling" all the virtual hugs coming to you from your family members on the other side of that lead screening ... and, in fact, over the Internet, too, from your growing circle of friends all around the world! Internet-hugs to Miriam, Mary, and Markus, too. I am the director of the group that makes the MIBG therapy doses. Our labs are on the north campus of the U of M. Clarke and Jeff made your MIBG today (Monday). So it will be ready for you tomorrow. They made enough for you and another patient in Philadelphia. We wish you all the best in licking this disease. I hope you and your family don't mind that I placed your name on the prayer chain at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor. I noticed that your family has taken comfort in Mike Heusel's ministry. Mike was a member of St. Luke. Remember that God is with you, tomorrow and always. Place your hope in Him and He will give you His strength. I pray that God will use my co-workers and me through the medicine that we made to make you whole. My love to you and your family, David Gildersleeve Monday, November 04, 2002 -- 13:29:12 (EST) Name: Sally Location: Seattle, Monday, November 04, 2002 -- 09:31:48 (EST) Name: anne, Tom, and Johannes -- Email: doyleyad@stolaf.edu Location: Northfield, MN USA Congratulations to Mary and Markus, 10 years? really? It was nice to see pictures of the Byzantine-Jackie O dress again! And Miriam, we hope you're enjoying Linda's--the Halloween parade sounds fun, I did that years ago, even before you were born! lots of love, anne, tom, and johannes (who is learning how to eat cooked carrots all by himself!) Monday, November 04, 2002 -- 01:32:29 (EST) Name: annette steve and rowan Location: Oakland, CA We will be sending you good healing thoughts this week as you start on this new procedure. Glad to hear you had a fun Halloween. Rowan thinks it's one of the best days of the year. He was a wizard this year. There was a great haunted house on our trick or treat route even had dancing skeletons, and talking ghosts and a coffin which open periodically with a corpse which sat up. Rowan kept saying to reassure everyone around, "it's only makeup, that's not scary" but he still held my hand even tighter each time it happened. If you look at the photos of your Mom and Dad on the web site it sure looks like your Mom has gotten taller in the past 10 years, or did your Dad shrink? :) We love you and think of you all often.
